Some times you do not appreciate what you have until it is gone. That quite often happens after a breakup. Once he is gone, you realize that you have lost the love of your life. Perhaps a challenging hobby or volunteer work. By taking an interest in things other than trying to get him back, your ex boyfriend will be surprised and impressed. But he will not want you to pull to far away from him and become accustomed to being without him.
Your ex boyfriend will feel the need to let you know that he is still around, lest you become too involved with your new life and forget him. The love of your life will also see that there is a real possibility that you might become the love of someone else's life. This will make him feel that he had better contact you. His first contact will probably be by email to see how fast you will answer. Don't answer it and he will have to call.
Be sure you can talk to him without crying or do not take his call. You can let him leave a message and call him back when you feel strong enough. The fact that he has contacted you shows that you have pulled back the love of your life. From this point on, it is only a matter of time until you will get your ex boyfriend back.
