There are wide varieties of herbs that have been found to be effective in keeping the human body young and healthy. Of the several anti ageing herbs, Ginseng is perhaps one of the most popular and commonly used. Its health enhancing properties have been known to man since ancient times as is evident by its extensive use over the last 5000 years. The herb’s botanical name Panax means “all heal” in Greek.

Ginseng is believed to have first originated from Manchuria. The ancient Chinese believed that drinking Ginseng tea lengthened their life span and gave them energy. It is in fact a very popular energy drink in China and other Asian countries. Today, this belief is still strong not only in China but across the world, making this herb perhaps one of the most used medicinal plants worldwide. It is used widely in anti ageing therapy and is a common additive in rejuvenating creams and lotions. It is also used in energy tonics and is said to boost mental clarity and alertness. You can use ginseng to improve your mental abilities and retard progress of mental aging.

Ginseng can be categorized into three types - Oriental, Siberian and American. The Siberian variety is not exactly Ginseng but a derivative of the Oriental herb. However, all three varieties have very similar medicinal properties.

The Ginseng root is the most commonly used portion of this herb and it is effective both in fresh or dried form. The leaves of this plant are also used in medicine but considered less effective than the roots, which are widely used in a number of products. Ginseng roots are fleshy and look somewhat like ginger or turmeric plant roots.

Some of the major health benefits that can be derived from Ginseng are:

• It aids in rectifying respiratory problems including asthma.
• Digestion is said to improve immensely by drinking Ginseng tea. This, in turn, helps improve overall health.
• The herb reduces the risk of cancer, arthritis, and high cholesterol.
• It is a most effective stress buster, reducing high blood pressure. Studies have shown that men and women who intake ginseng are able to withstand higher emotional and physical stress.
• It is also said to reduce fatigue and improve memory. In fact, ginseng is one of the few herbs that have been found effective in chronic fatigue syndrome.
• Ginseng is also said to be effective in fighting away infections like common cold and flu.
• Women ingest Ginseng to improve estrogen levels during menopause.

It is recommended to use ginseng in the least processed form, as excessive processing is said to decrease the effectiveness of this herb.

Ginseng is a very effective herbal remedy for overall health improvement, which in turn leads to a longer, healthier life. The herb acts as a tonic, boosts memory and energy levels thus keeping the elderly agile and active. As the herb both prevents and cures a wide range of health related problems, health-conscious people across the world incorporate it in their regular diet.
