In the self-help industry, Dr. Stephen R. Covey is a well-known speaker and author of subjects on becoming a successful individual. He is, after all, a successful person himself with his seminal work The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People being one of the highest-selling books in the industry. Now, 18 years after its publication comes his follow-up work entitled The 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness DVD.

Transition in a Book

Basically, the rationale behind the book lies in the changing world that we live in. Since the publication of The 7 Habits, the world now presents more challenges, more complexities and more ambiguities that must be tackled with a new mindset. Said mindset is not as different as what has been learned in the first book but there is an addition - the 8th habit, of course - that will take the individual from being highly effective to being highly successful.

Many will think that The 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness DVD is just a rehash of the ideas presented - and perfected, for that matter - in the first book. In a way, the second book can be accused of being an encyclopedic version of the first book since there are summaries of the latter (8th Habit) in the former (7 Habits). Still, you will still be able to benefit from new ideas for the development of one's self including leadership skills.

You will be taught how to achieve greatness with the 8th habit with the 7 habits as the platform. Indeed, why just be highly effective in an organization when you can elevate yourself to greatness? You can even become the head of your own company that, in turn, will become the leader of the industry. Dreams do come true and so can yours.

However, Dr. Stephen R. Covey could have written The 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness DVD, so to speak, in a more user-friendly manner. As previously mentioned, you may find that the 8th Habit reads more like a summarized work of the 7 Habits with a few new if very useful ideas thrown in. Then again, the assumption with the 8th Habit is that you have read the 7 Habits and, hence, you can better understand the more complex ideas presented in the second book.

Find Your Voice and Inspire Others to Find Their Voice

Let's move on to the contents of the book itself. You will find that The 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness DVD is divided into two sections, which is as follows:

* Finding your voice means knowing exactly who you are - what you love to do, what you want to achieve and what you have the natural talent for, among other things. You can become a great achiever when you can transform mental energy into vision, physical energy into discipline, emotional energy into passion, and spiritual energy into conscience.

* Inspiring other people to also find their voice. You must become a leader, a theme expounded through the first and second books.

So, is The 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness DVD by Dr. Stephen R. Covey worth listening to? We say, yes, it is worth your time of day if only to strengthen your 7 habits and become great in your own field of endeavor.
