As a first time mom, you can be groping for techniques and ways on how to properly care for your baby. Being a mother is a tricky job and one that is rewarding in its own stressful way. After giving birth, all you can think about is how to nurture your baby and provide for his needs. You can get help from different books that teach you how to feed your baby and what to feed it to make him strong. When the baby gets sick or does not feel all too well, a pediatrician is the person you should go to for proper consultation.

As you go through this process of motherhood, you learn so many things. Feeding your baby, for example, may be easy for the first few weeks or months. But as your baby grows, he will need a lot more than just milk. Breast milk is the best source of nutrients for your baby. The substance can easily be digested and has all the vitamins and minerals your baby needs. After a few days of feeding, you will notice changes on your baby's body. The once wrinkled skin slowly gives way to a smooth, supple covering that needs extra care when touched.

During the first few weeks, your baby will be asking for milk at least every four hours. As soon as your baby touches the nipple, the rooting reflex will instantly kick in and your baby will start to suck for milk. Make sure you support his head properly and press down on the part of the breast that is covering down the nose of your baby so that he can feed freely without choking. At this age, although your baby can breathe while feeding, it is still best to take precautionary measures to avoid choking and other feeding accidents.

Your baby stops feeding as soon as he is full. After feeding, remember to burp your baby to prevent any uncomfortable feeling that may develop such as choking, regurgitation and colic. The latter is described as incessant crying which lead your baby to develop gas. Some say too much gas in your baby's stomach makes your baby uncomfortable enough to make him cry so much. Every baby experiences this at some point, and as a first time mom, this can be nerve-racking and scary. Before jumping into this conclusion, look for other factors that may be the cause of your baby's cries. Check for poop in the diaper because this causes discomfort. Other causes can be hunger or simply that your baby is sleepy and wants to be held.

Your baby can live on milk alone for up to four months. As he grows and develops his muscles, senses, and learns other body movements, he will need more sources of nutrients. You will know when he’s ready to take on softer solid foods when he is able to hold his head without support. He will show signs that the milk you feed him is not enough when he starts to feed on more ounces of milk than his usual diet.
