Are you seriously pondering on switching to a new career? Whether you’re in your prime or middle-aged, there are strong reasons that may convince you to jump ship and pursue your dreams. Some individuals are hesitant to take the risk and would rather stay in their comfort zone, ending up stuck for years in a career that’s uninspiring and leaves them miserable. There’s a bestselling book that uses mice to represent how different types of people go for, or dilly dally in going after, what they really want in life, which very well applies to making a career change. The simple parable about characters looking for the coveted “cheese” illustrates that people can actually make things happen – if they set their minds to it. The same goes for making a much needed career change. Noted philosopher, author and personal coach Bob Proctor once expressed that if you clearly picture something in your mind, you’re bound to hold it in your hand. Another author and metaphysician goes further to say that the forces of the universe will conspire or rearrange itself to make it happen for you. Before deciding to switch careers, though, assess your reasons carefully. Some of the common reasons put forward by people who have made a career change are boredom, extreme stress and hampered quality of life, medical or health reasons, need for higher-paying job, or simply feeling ready to start something new or something that has long been put off.

In some cases, the big career change may be leaving behind the 9 to 5 daily grind and starting one’s own business, or concentrating on a work-at-home money-making option. This may be the ultimate career challenge for people who have always looked forward to being their own boss. However, running one’s own business is not without pitfalls – especially if you venture into it without a good plan and ample financial resources. Now there are some people who strike it on their own not for the monetary gain but because they really want to focus on a burning passion. Basic knowledge, pluck, and the ability to adapt are nonetheless needed to sustain a business endeavor. Even if you’re starting out as a small entrepreneur, there are tasks you’d be better off delegating or hiring experts to handle. One of these is marketing. A seasoned marketing professional with a track record of experience and who’s been there may help identify marketing opportunities and help your company grow. Hiring an accountant (and a franchise advisor if you’ve taken the franchising route) may also help you manage your business well. As for those who plan to work at home full-time, being aware of the drawbacks, like countless distractions (including personal errands, child care issues, telephone calls, and so on) must be taken into consideration.

Making a career change at 25, of course, brings with it a different set of challenges than if one were to move to a new field at 45. The reasons for working vary. If you’re pursuing another corporate position with better perks and benefits, you’d have to show that you’re a competitive candidate or possess a unique set of skills that can be an asset to the company you want to work for.
