Spring
Spring is when your garden is probably looking its best. Your bulbs are starting to bloom, the grass is young and green and the trees are blooming and alive. If you are planning on having a vegetable garden this year, spring is prime planting time. Be sure to plant your peas, radishes, carrots and watermelons early so that they will have plenty of time to get established before the warm summer sun arrives.
Spring is also a great time to clean up any damage from the winter. If you live in an area with heavy snows, you may have had some broken branches. Clean up any broken limbs and check around the yard for any other winter damage. You should also clean up any frozen plant matter or dead leaves left over from the year before. Getting your garden in order in the spring is a great way to celebrate all of your new growth.
While you are enjoying your spring bulbs, be sure to watch the blooms so that you will know which need to be split in the fall. If you have fewer blooms that usual, your blooms might be overcrowded and splitting them will make them look a lot better next year.
Summer
During the summer you will be busy harvesting the fruits of your springtime labor. Make sure that you walk through your garden each day looking for ripe fruits and vegetables so that you can harvest them at their prime. Also pay attention to where your favorite flowers are growing. This will make it much easier to gather seeds if you want to replant any of them next year.
Keep an eye out for bugs and insects in the garden. You may need to use various pest control techniques to keep these bugs from destroying your beautiful plants. Infestations are easiest to take care of when caught early, so watch for the early signs.
Fall
When fall starts to come, you will have a lot to do in the garden. Split your bulbs and replant as necessary. If you are growing any tender bulbs, make sure to dig them up so that you can store them in your garden shed where they won't freeze. Trim back any plants and clean up your yard as much as possible before the first snow. Frequent raking in the fall will save you a lot of time in the spring.
If you have any favorite plants, fall is the perfect time to gather seeds. Wait until the plants go to seed and then capture them with a small bag or envelope and store them for next year. While you are at it, fertilize your lawn so that it will have the nutrients it needs to get through the winter.
Winter
During the winter gardeners get to have a little bit of a break, especially in cold and snowy climates. However, you can start sprouting seeds indoors to get a head start on spring. You can also force a few bulbs in pots to enjoy a bit of the outdoors inside all winter long.
