Stink bugs are here to stay and if we do not take appropriate action to stop them from invading our homes and our lives. These pesky nuisances that have migrated from China seem to like the safe haven they have found in America and are now literally spreading their wings in every state in the union. Having first landed in Pennsylvania in 1998, they have been found in states from New York to West Virginia and have now even reached the western states of California, Washington and Idaho. The mature insect is said to be about 17mm long and is usually brown or green in color with dark and light-colored bands running across its body. Two glands located on either side of the thorax releases a foul-smelling liquid which gives this insect its name. It is also called the shield bug in view of the shield like plate on its back. Whatever name they are called, it is a pest of the first order that loves to thrive on fruit and vegetables and is fast becoming one of the most hated species by farmers.
There are certain things that these insects like better than others and seem to be more attracted to tomatoes, soybeans, cabbage, cotton, mustard, potted flowers and any kind of fruit and sap trees. They can hide inside leaves, plants, trees and weeds and it is suggested that if you ever find them outside in the garden, close to your home, immediate action should be taken to remove or destroy them by burning any foliage at the perimeter of your home.
Having these insects invade your home is no fun and it is better to be prepared before they start their attack. Apart from destroying all greenery, you should also make sure there are no lights around your house that would attract these creatures. You will also have to make preparations like you were getting ready for war by closing all doors, windows, holes and outlets that have passages into the home from outside. One tiny space is enough for them to find its way in and then it will be just a question of how many minutes or hours before you have to give in and be defeated. In that short span of time whole armies of them would have marched in, even without you being aware of it.
Unfortunate as it is, you will also have to remove all those lovely flowers and plants from your home and its best that you have a barren area around the perimeter of your house to ensure that these pests will not approach it. Destroying these insects with pesticides and chemicals is not that easy since they are said to be very resistant to most chemicals. Only a few are found to be effective against destroying these pests and you should be able to find which ones are best by contacting your local pest control authority.
