personal credit can affect many aspects of your life that you may not even think about daily. Not only does it deal with you being able to purchase items and get cards, but it can even keep you from getting a job.
Your report and score are commonly used as a means of prescreening you for a job. Many employers will have you sign a statement allowing them to check your report prior to offering you a position. This is commonly done so that a potential employer can see if you have any outstanding balances that would cause you to be in serious debt.
This can be an issue because some employers believe that if you are in debt, you are at a high risk for theft from their company. So in order to get a job with some companies, your report is looked at. If you are in debt and seriously behind or overextended, you may not get the job. Here are a few things you can do to clean up your credit.
The top three reporting companies have online websites that you can visit, and there is one that allows you to get a free report annually. By going to these sites and identifying yourself by answering a few questions, you can have access to the report. Look over it closely, and make sure to take note of any errors.
When errors are found, you can try to correct them immediately through the site. There is an area on each site that will allow you to submit information as to why an item on your report is wrong. This could range from the item being included in a discharged bankruptcy to being paid off and simply not removed.
To get this removed, you will be required to input the reason for it needing to be removed. The company will then contact the creditor and ask them to respond to the error noted. They will have thirty days to do so. If during that time the creditor does not respond, it will be removed from your report.
If the creditor responds showing proof that the debt is valid, it will remain. If the creditor shows proof that substantiates your claim, it will then be removed. This can take up to thirty days for the removal to take place. Another way of getting items removed from your report is to directly contact the creditor in writing.
Contacting them in writing with the account number and your name or other identifying information will help them to find the correct debt that they hold of yours. Simply asking the creditor to remove the item from your report is generally enough to have them do so. This is wise if the debt has been charged off or paid off after collections efforts. If you should find that the account is more than 10 years old, contacting the creditor about removing it is essential. For more information on your
