"Patients have many orthodontists to choose from - and more and more dentists are jumping on the orthodontics bandwagon by offering Invisalign treatment," said Kanani,a Vancouver invisible braces specialist. "This list gives patients information to help them in their decision-making process."
1. In most instances, opt for an actual orthodontist, not a general dentist. Orthodontists are dentists who have received an additional three years of extensive training in orthodontics after graduating from dental school. Orthodontists have the experience and training to recognize the most appropriate way to treat any orthodontic problem at the right age. Dentists are great at providing excellent care for your general dentistry needs, and although some dentists have additional experience in treating orthodontics cases, the majority of dentists do not have the same depth of experience as an orthodontist would.
2. Make sure the provider you select is a board certified orthodontist. Orthodontists who are certified by the Canadian Association of Orthodontics have completed an accredited graduate program, passed a written test, and presented treatment cases in front of a panel of expert examiners.
3. Select an orthodontist your child connects with. "During the treatment process, your child will need to comply with many instructions from the staff," notes Kanani, a Vancouver Invisalign provider. "The more engaged the patient is with the orthodontist and the office in general, the better the child’s compliance will be – and you'll see better, and faster, end results." Furthermore, patients who like attending their orthodontic appointments and enjoy seeing their orthodontist usually are better at practicing oral hygiene and following instructions, says the Vancouver orthodontist.
4. Choose an orthodontist offering appointments during a wide variety of times. With a busy lifestyle, you may find it beneficial to have an orthodontist with the flexibility to see you any day of the week.
5. Choose an orthodontist with flexible financing options. "Find a provider who offers flexible, affordable finance options, particularly in this economy," says Kanani, a Vancouver braces provider. Orthodontic treatment is frequently a two-year process, during which there can be changes in the family's finances. "An orthodontist who can adjust the payment schedule for families who fall on hardships can mean the difference between completing your child’s treatment or not," Kanani notes.
