Theft of Personal Belongings - Car Insurance

Your personal belongings should be covered by your car insurance if they’re stolen from your car or lost if your car is stolen. You may leave CDs, money or expensive electrical equipment in your car, so it’s reassuring to know that these will be covered against the upsetting experience of theft.

If you’re unlucky enough to have your car stolen, your car insurance providers will usually cover the cost of belongings which have been stolen from it, or are lost when it is stolen. However they may only compensate you for the cost of the item, minus an amount for wear and tear and loss of value.

Your provider may only cover up to £250 for each incident, which may not cover the cost of all your lost belongings. This is why it’s important not to leave any expensive goods in your car. The cost of a few CDs, a navigation device and a nice handbag, for example, could easily add up to beyond £250. You may hope that hiding expensive equipment in the glove box will keep them safe, but if someone has got into your car, they are likely to get into the glove compartment too. The best solution is to not leave anything valuable in the car and you could even leave the glove box open to make it absolutely clear to any would-be thieves that there is nothing of value there.

You should also be aware that your car insurance will only protect against the loss of personal belongings and it may not cover the cost of any goods, tools or samples you have in your car for trade or business. You should make sure that any goods you have for business use are secure on a different insurance policy to protect them against theft.

The personal belongings cover provided with your car insurance will not usually cover the cost for lost or damaged telephone equipment either, so you should always take your phone with you. Money, stamps, tickets and documents are also not covered against loss under your car insurance.

Most importantly, you should keep all the windows, doors, roof openings and hood closed and locked in order for any claim to be valid – and hopefully to prevent loss from theft in the first place.
