A Few Moving Tips to Help You on Your Way

Many people consider a move to be their least favorite activity. First comes the packing and the general chaos that comes with it. Once everything reaches your destination, the unpacking generates further confusion as you start hunting for your most critical items. To help you avoid some of the frustration, consider these moving tips.

Use the proper box for the job. For example, a wardrobe box saves time when it comes to both packing and unpacking. You do not need to remove garments from hangers. Instead, you just hang them inside the wardrobe and seal it. Your clothes arrive with little or no wrinkling, ready to go straight from the box to your closet. Purchase "dish packs" and "glass packs" for your china and crystal. These heavy-duty boxes have inserts to hold items in separate compartments. You will still need to wrap items, but they will be better protected.

Pack a "critical needs" box that contains items you may need immediately upon arrival. Include items such as medication, paper plates, your personal phone book, or a measuring tape. Another box should contain enough towels and sheets to handle your first night, just in case you arrive too late to unpack. You might also want to consider a box with cleansers and rags inside or one with a hammer, screwdriver, and level for hanging pictures. If your child has a favorite toy that is a necessary part of his bedtime ritual, include it in one of your "critical" boxes.

Label every box on each side with its contents. This makes it easier to get boxes in the right room as well as expediting your search for specific items. If you label only one side, you risk having your notes obscured by other boxes, which can result in additional handling.

Plan before you start packing. Gather all items you need to place in emergency boxes. Next, select a room and pack everything in it. Start with one corner and work your way around the room. Leave out only those items you will need prior to departure.

Use the smallest box possible for the job. Large boxes should be reserved for bulky, lightweight items such as pillows or stuffed animals. It is better to have three small boxes that are easy to handle than one that is too heavy for one person to carry.

Invest in packing peanuts or bubble wrap for your fragile items. To economize, you can also save your newspapers for a week or two prior to your move. Towels and blankets can be used in a pinch to wrap pictures, lamps or clocks. Place a layer of padding in the bottom of the box to cushion breakables. Pack the items carefully so that they cannot bump against each other when carrying them.

Give yourself plenty of time to accomplish each task. Start early by packing away items that you will not need before the move. Books, photograph albums, and extra linens are good candidates. Out-of-season clothing, rarely used kitchen appliances, and wall art are also possibilities for early packing.
